Welcome to “I Write Hard Things”. My publication is a reader-supported. If you connect with my work, to receive new posts consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. When I write something new, you will be notified through your email or through the app.
If I haven’t told you lately, I appreciate you. You chose me. You voluntarily give my words your time and attention.
This community has grown so much recently. I want you all know who I am, and what I stand for as a black woman writer, a mother of three adult sons, two who are autistic adults. I am a deeply feeling person. I have a wide open giving heart.
I am a California girl, who lives in Texas. I am an ocean lover, I love music, wine, painting, reading and studying human behavior
I look forward to getting to know you so we can learn from each other’s stories. I would very much like this to be an interactive community where we connect through our shared humanity.
One of my most important writing goals is to make you as a reader feel less alone in the world, and create awareness about neurodivergence, mental health and wellness.
I love to make you laugh a little at the tough things in life that we go through as humans. Humor saves me on my most difficult days.
In April, 2024, I wrote “"Finding My People" -A Mama Blogger Starts over on Substack. It’s a brief synopsis of my writing life, and what brings me here to Substack.
This week I was a guest with my friend and fellow writer
, on her podcast, Spicy Soul Mama. You are cordially invited to listen. Shelley guides us through a conversation about writing, mothering, young men who live with autism and mental health challenges, our spiritual practices, coping mechanisms and self-care.To help me get to know you…

Hi, Karen. I recently stumbled across you on Substack and am so glad I did. I am a retired public relations professional, 21 years your senior! (That sentence took courage to write!)
I was born and raised in Chicago until I married my second husband in 1987 and moved to Cincinnati where I now live.
Moving to a new area was a difficult decision. I was leaving my entire close-knit family. My husband and I worked for the same large corporation and I was being transferred to Cincinnati. At that time, I had been with the company 22 years.
I am excited to have met a fellow writer and I look forward to reading future posts of yours.
With gratitude,
Darlyne
